Titanium
Titanium is a high grade metal used in a lot of the frames we sell here at Boneham Peters. It is an ultra light, strong, anti-corrosive and hypo allergic material that makes it ideal for glasses. It is sometimes mixed with other metals such as copper to create beta-titanium, which makes the material more flexible and easier to adjust. Manufacturers, such as Orgreen, combine these two types of titanium. They use a pure sheet of titanium for the front of their frames, and a beta-titanium for their temples (arms) to ensure the best fit, and also a sturdier product.
Some interesting facts. Titanium has the highest strength to density ratio of any metallic element. Meaning that it is as strong as steel, but at least 45% lighter. This allows for an extremely comfortable frame that is also very tough. Titanium holds its shape for far longer than acetate, as it does not react to heat from the environment, meaning fewer adjustments are needed after it’s fit to your face. Titanium also does not rust or corrode, it is so sturdy, that even after 4000 years in seawater, corrosion would only have penetrated the material to the thickness of a sheet of paper.
